Due to the history of Ouija boards and planchettes, patents on the items would have been difficult to enforce. Though it is Elijah Bond’s name on the patent, it was his partner Charles Kennard who moved to Baltimore with the idea of commercializing the “alphabetic board” idea used for years by Ohio Spiritualists, and their patent changed everything. The Ouija board sparked a revolution, and signaled the tolling death knell of automatic writing planchettes.
