Credit must be given, of course, to The Strand Magazine (Sherlock Holmes stories first appeared here) for being the first publication to bring us, in transcribed print format, “The Haunted Ceiling”, a previously unpublished ghost story, in their 2016 pre-Christmas issue. The story was written by H. G. Wells (The War of the Worlds, The invisible Man, The Time Machine) around 1895 (date approximated by The Strand).

Haint Blue recently discovered the actual hand-written manuscript in the Public Domain; and we wanted to share it with our readers, here, on Haint-Blue Shudders!

It would rock to be able to say we are the first place Wells’ hand-written manuscript (ms.) was published. The ms., though, which includes 16 pages, complete with markups (how cool is that?), has been sleeping quietly in an archives at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1954 when it was purchased with Wells’ personal papers. The ms. was digitized by the University and published elsewhere for the first time by the Hathi Trust Digital Library (citation/link captioned with Page 1 below).*

We believe, after an arduous search of the Internet, that Haint-Blue Shudders is the first Internet blog to feature these pages right out of literary history!

Check them out, below…and join us in celebrating the magic pen and creative mind of a true literary master!
